Kids have a natural ability to create, experiment and learn. It’s our role, as adults, to foster this ability, linking it to passions and interests.

theINmag supports parents in this role. Rather than just being ‘on task’ by reading theINmag, kids can take that next step to be ‘IN task’ by thinking, designing, building, creating and submitting.

The team of experienced teachers and parents, here at theINmag, curate educational content to authentically encourage curiosity, sparking engagement in kids.

We’re here to support kids in their educational journey.

Frequently Asked
Questions

  • theINmag is a tri-annual magazine. We release an issue in February, June and October. In the near future, once the mag has grown a bit, we will move to be quarterly, aligning a release with each school term.

  • This is a tricky one. To answer simply - you won’t know if they are in. You’ll need to buy a copy to find out.

We do our absolute best to get as much kid-created content in each issue. Our judging committee work hard to make the process fair and equitable.

Our number one priority is Child Safety. To ensure this, we do not collect any contactable data from kids.

We do flick-throughs of new issues on Insta, so maybe follow us over there!

  • Oh, in lots of different ways!

It can be used to develop a love of reading, whether reading individually or with others. It’s not just reading though - theINmag has a huge range of possibilities to engage your learner.

From math problems to photography, hobbies to riddles, there is something for every kid.

The other great part about theINmag, is that it encourages kids to actually create and make their own content.

  • We have a team of experienced teachers and parents who judge and curate the content to be published within theINmag.

They pour over the curriculum, finding links, thinking about how and where each submission could fit. They look at each submitted piece on it’s merits, considering where it could fit within the magazine.

  • Head to the SHOP on our website to grab a copy for your kids.

If you want it to be a gift - when you get to the ‘ship to’ section, feel free to put your kids’ name in, and it’ll be shipped to them.

It's a good way to generate some good old fashioned letterbox excitement.

What’s INside?

  • This is a very special part of theINmag. There’s a huge map of Australia with little dots to show where all of this issue’s content creators are from. Each dot represents a piece of content in theINmag! How cool, right? Are there any creators that live close to you? Is one of the dots yours?!

Adults could use this map as an investigation challenge. Where might these dots be? How far apart are they? Can you prove it? What are the landmarks? What’s missing?

  • Each issue, one special text is chosen to become our 'Feature Story'. We search for a piece of writing that grips the reader's attention, making them think deeply about the text.

The chosen story needs complementary images to support your writing. If you would like a friend to do the drawings for you, that’s great! After all, that’s what a lot of professional writers do! Kids submit their entries through the 'Taste the PIE' section.

  • Writing allows us to share our ideas, experiences and stories with others. Authors write for three reasons; to persuade, inform or entertain their readers.

Be inventive and get excited about writing! Share your ideas with other kids all over Australia!

For adults, this can be a great place to find high-quality mentor texts to complement your classroom practice. How exciting to share, critique and learn from real student samples!

  • Making the best ME! is focused on helping kids all around Australia manage their well-being. Maintaining a healthy mindset requires balancing emotions, friendships and safety.

What makes you feel happy, healthy and secure? Share your suggestions with theINmag to help support others.

Send IN some examples and help make the world a better place.

Adults, this section can help support a healthy way-of-being with your kids. It can complement The Capabilities, encouraging kids to make healthy choices.

  • It's time to get creative! There are so many amazingly artistic kids out there. Share some of your soon-to-be famous creations!

Now remember, artwork is more than just drawing and painting. We are hunting for a range of artworks. We’d love to see sculptures, crafts, murals, chalk designs, pottery… literally anything creative! Send it IN!

One of the cool things about The Art Hub, is that your artwork could be included anywhere in theINmag, not just here in The Art Hub. We often use artwork to complement other sections, so keep your eyes peeled!

Adults - these artworks can be used as picture prompts to drive purposeful conversation, initiate ‘I notice, I wonder’ protocols, or use them as story starters.

  • One of our most loved sections! This is the space where kids can share the jokes and riddles they have heard recently. They can submit cool facts or create puzzles for others to solve and learn a new game with a famous guest presenter.

  • Problem solving is a skill that can last a lifetime. Just like any muscle, it's important to work out our brain, stretching it by attempting a range of challenging tasks.

Everyone's brain works differently. The way we approach problems is based on the experiences we've had in the past. This is your chance to share methods and strategies with others. How cool is that?

For teachers, this can be a great place to find mathematic problems posed by kids. It’s surprising how deep and thought-provoking these can be! We will also showcase a range of solutions, strategies and methods you can show your kids. These would be great for an “I notice, I wonder” protocol…

  • Photos capture the special moments in our lives. Do you want to share a time or place from your life? Let's get it IN!

Professional photographers take photos of landscapes, animals, fashion, buildings and plants.

Please remember, here at theINmag, we don’t use photos which have people's faces. It helps us keep kids safe.

Adults, this can be a great little incentive to get your kids outside, taking photos. Use the photos in the mag as prompts to generate stories, ideas and inspiration.

  • Each issue, we take the time to interview a person who is passionate about their career choices.

This is someone who absolutely loves the job they have chosen.

You can learn a little about them and consider whether you might like to do something like this when you are older.

  • Wondering sparks curiosity and creativity. The world's deepest thinkers, inventors and creators are master wonderers.

Is there something that you would like to learn more about? Have you noticed something that really made you think? Is there something you would like to understand on a deeper level?

Send IN the best questions you have!

  • This is your chance to share all the games, hobbies and interests you love to do with the rest of Australia. Will you inspire others to try something new?

What do you do for fun? A hobby is something that you do for enjoyment! Exploring nature, listening to or playing music, cooking something for the family, spending time with your pets, using technology, building and designing? We want to know all about it! Send it IN!

For adults, this section allows kids to share their passions with each other, allowing you to make cross-curricular links. So much of what kids love to do actually ties in well with what we teach. Encouraging kids to tap into their passions and interests provides increased engagement and can enhance their inquiry skillset.
